For years now I've been fascinated by airline safety cards. The vacant expression of the illustrated figures in the face of sheer calamity has the sort of humor and grim irony I cant resist. Last year while visiting the MET I noticed a parallel between these illustrations and the ones found on ancient Egyptian Canopic jars. The chaotic swatch of gray paint atop the figure's head is reminiscent of a Nemes crown, bringing the idea full circle.
